Another project leader leaves Google X.Emily Kolawole oversaw a confidential moonshot project. Several Google X projects have either shut down or spun out of parent Alphabet. AdvertisementGoogle X recently lost another team leader. Emi Kolawole, a project leader at the Alphabet moonshot division since 2021, left the company in January, according to her LinkedIn. Kolawole oversaw project operations and kept its budget "lean by leveraging strong relationships across X and Alphabet," she wrote on LinkedIn.

The AI startup, named after inventor Lewis Howard Latimer and affectionately known as "The BlackGPT" is an answer to the bias, lack of cultural competency, and erasure found in popular AI tools like ChatGPT, says Latimer CEO and cofounder John Pasmore. Pasmore said the company has plans to launch about five more products specifically focused on bias detection. The move-fast, break-things energy in AI created an opportunity for Latimer, Pasmore said. This method is baked into Latimer's nascent suite of business offerings set to launch after the release of its API. He is confident that there is "a billion-dollar opportunity" to address bias in incumbent AI offerings for enterprises.

We’re growing some teeth as to what can be done with AI, but we also see where there’s progress, there’s attack. One of the things I like to point out with AI systems is that if your AI systems fail on people of color, you don’t have a robust system. If your AI doesn’t work on the global majority, if your AI doesn’t work for women, if your AI doesn’t work for people with disabilities, once you start expanding all of the areas we’re talking about, it comes to your AI doesn’t work for humanity. To me, that’s a proactive approach of saying, how do we build consumer AI technology in a way that’s more ethical? I was talking to Sam Altman about the climate impact of AI, especially these large language models and generative AI systems.

Peloton's annual 45-minute Turkey Burn Ride appeared to have crashed during the session. Not technical enoughSeveral tech employees lamented that the programming wasn't technical enough to be useful to them. They were comfortable speaking to an audience that looked like them, but also felt an urgency to share knowledge that Black tech professionals don't always get access to. While many of the Black tech workers at Afrotech were waiting for the other shoe to drop, they also scouted for startup ideas and funding.

AI computing has a sustainability problem. Google data centers consumed 5.2 billion gallons of water in 2022, up 20% from a year earlier. A recent Cowen research report estimated that AI data centers could require more than five times the power of traditional facilities. While a regular cloud server uses 300 to 500 watts, according to Shaolei Ren , a researcher at UC Riverside who has studied how modern AI models use resources. Communities are setting up data privacy controls and internet connectivity on their own terms and in ways that don't rely as much on big tech companies.

Dhaundiyal agreed with Hinnant that for lower-level tech workers the call to unionize rings louder. Adoption of AI tools like chatbots ChatGPT and Google Bard remains surprisingly low. Some days, it feels like the whole world is using ChatGPT. A chart from a Morgan Stanley research report Morgan StanleyPeople mostly use chatbot services to learn about a new topic. When online shopping, 56% of respondents said they start by using Google Search, YouTube, or Bard. Online travel research was a little more split between Google and travel services like Expedia, and Bookings.com.

Bernstein analysts weigh in on how the market for AI is likely to develop. Brokerage firm Bernstein is famous for its "Blackbook" research tomes that dive deeply into important topics for investors.
